Ahoy Matey

Recently Sawyer has become enthralled with Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Typically I try to discourage "non-educational" shows and Jake fell into that category for me. Since Sawyer has always enjoyed Sesame Street we usually went that direction with his entertainment.

Well he recently discovered Jake and the Neverland Pirates and I soon changed my tune. Jake has helped his imagination grow by leaps and bounds. Sawyer is the type of kid that likes black and white and typically has no time for imaginary play, but since watching Jake you can find him and Nora touring the house being pirates, looking to help someone and collecting gold deb looms.

The will seriously play for hours and it's opened up a whole world of new fun for Sawyer. I would certainly no longer say Jake is a non-educational show. While he may not learn letters and numbers he is learning a valuable lesson about being creative and I LOVE it.

One day as Sawyer was collecting his gold deb looms he asked for a team treasure chest. I suggested we go buy a treasure chest and he could personalize it by painting it himself. He was over the moon excited about that idea. So, off we went to the store and bought an inexpensive wooden box. And this is what ensued.

Nora quickly turned the project into body art...as much as she has been drawing on herself lately I think she may have a career as a tattoo artist in her future

She was quickly transferred to the bath
He has also demonstrated the use of binoculars and a sword using his hands, which made me think about other crafts we could create for more pirate props. I think the next activity will be a telescope or binoculars made from toilet paper/paper towel rolls.

I love seeing where his imagination takes him!

  1. I laughed out loud at the picture of Nora painting herself! I sometimes feel guilty about letting my kids watch "too many movies," but as soon as they watch one, they go play it by acting out their own version of a story with those characters or themes and they play together for hours! Definitely redeems the time spent watching tv-- I love seeing them use their imaginations and play together so well!

  2. Wahoo for Jake! We didn't get Disney channel until about a year ago and I was in the same boat as you. Kiddos (well really only Mackie at that point) would only watch Sesame Street, Clifford, or a few others on PBS. However, we had Disney channel as a promo and were really spoiled by it. ;) Now the kiddos LOVE Jake, Sophia, and Doc. Brax is even going to be a pirate for Halloween. He now sleeps with his Jake pirate ship since grandma/pa gave it to him for his birthday. Oh our boys! :)
