Maps

Maps seem to be all the rage right now and I've totally jumped on the bandwagon.  Heres a look at my spin on maps.

Embroidered map of KS w/ a heart for Smith Center

Picture with the 3 states we have lived in together (via Q.A. Designs)

And a map of the US (an attempt to use up fabric scraps :)

So now the question is how to hang it.  Any ideas?  I want it to go above the couch in the basement.  But the walls are white and so is the map background.  I want it to stand out against the wall but I also don't want to invest a lot of money.

  1. LOVE the US map, that's so cool! I've always had a love for maps :) And thanks for sharing the Sawyer/duck story too. I've always lived in fear of things like that and find myself thinking thru scenarios and imagining rescues to comfort myself. Pearl got stuck head down in the SC pool around that age, and actually it was kinda a relief to be able to say now that we've experienced that and know how it goes?

  2. I think the us map wall hanging is great!! where did you find a pattern? For hanging, my suggestion would be to put a "frame" (1-2" border) around it in fabric - a dark blue or green (whatever works in your basement) - and on the top border you can put small holes in the back on each end for a dowel and then hang it that way. Or you can put a few loops on the top of the border and hang it on a dowel that way. Fun stuff, Kristen!

  3. Thanks Kit! Good to know this experience will eventually be a good thing :)

Thanks Tiff! That's a great idea. I had not thought about a dowel rod! That would be easy and inexpensive. For the pattern I just google imaged an outline map of the US. Then I put the image in Excel and adjusted it to the size I wanted. If you lived closer I would just give you the templates (it would save lots of cutting time) but I already promised them to someone here in OH. Just zoom out on Excel and it will let you spread the image across multiple pages. Another tip: label each state as you cut them out :)

  4. Yes, you can check "falling in a duck pond" off your list now ;)

  5. I was going to suggest the same thing as Tiffani but maybe make it heavier also (kind of like a quilt) with layers so that it hangs well agains the wall.
