Tears

Lately this has been Sawyer's disposition every time I set him down. Sometimes he calms down after a few minutes, sometimes he does not. Up to this point he has been a VERY happy baby, always smiling and content. So, what's going on? Teething? Separation anxiety? There's a white spot on his lower gum that could indicate teething, but he mainly cries when you set him down or walk out of the room. He has even been crying in his sleep. I'll hear him cry and go into his room. He has his eyes closed and head down, but he's screaming...

I'm not against letting him cry it out, but this behavior is very unusual for him. So, what's your expert opinion...teething, spoiled rotten, separation anxiety, just a passing stage, hunger?

  1. Kristen...ugh, sounds like you're having some long days! Is he pulling on his ears at all, or does he wince a bit when you mess with his ears? Maren melts down when she gets an ear infection, and it's the only time she ever wakes up in the night screaming. Just a thought!

  2. Separation anxiety is my guess. Eve is going through the same thing right now. If I set her down to do something, she will start to fuss. If she decides she's not getting attention, she will start to scream like something bad happened. My boys hit this stage around this time also. It will just take awhile to pass through this stage and be hard on the nerves until then.

  3. I agree getting the ears checked is a good idea, Levi never runs a temp w/an ear infection, and sometimes when they teeth they get fluid in the ear. Hang in there, this too shall pass.

  4. I will second the ear check! Jake cried lots in the middle of the night with that. Also, teething seems to have similar symptoms for him, he'll cry in the middle of night, become clingy and fussy. It's always nice to rule out the ears though, then you can give tylenol and hope it eases the pain, which it sounds like Sawyer might have. :( poor guy, it's tough in this stage.

  5. My thoughts already have been posted...but I'll give you my two cents (for what it's worth..I'm a newbie in the mama dept, too!) :)

Mackie seems to get ear infections when she starts to teethe. We just took her in last week because she, too, would fuss and just not act like her normal self. The diagnosis? Ear infection. The only other time she had one was about 2 weeks before her first tooth cut through. (she's now working on tooth #2!)

Another idea is separation anxiety. But I'd check his ears to see if that solves the problem. The nice thing about ear infections is that they can give you antibiotic to help get rid of it quickly! (and, if I remember right, around 6-7 months was when Mack had her first ear infection).

    Best wishes, mama!

  6. Thanks everyone! We took all your advice and took him to the doctor to check his ears. No signs of ear infection which is good. Also, he has 2 bottom teeth that are through the gum. Luckily, he has calmed down a bit since his teeth poked through. Thankfully it was nothing serious. Now we'll know how teething affects him and I'll gladly give him a little more lovin' during those days :)
